Preservatives for home and personal care
Every water-containing cream, shampoo, wipe, cleaner or softener needs a preservative that stops bacteria, yeast and mould for the life of the product. EsoDant is Ester India's range of 23+ preservative systems for exactly that job: phenoxyethanol and its paraben-free blends, DMDM hydantoin, CMIT/MIT, glycol boosters and organic-acid systems, all manufactured at our own plant at Nandesari, Vadodara, since 1980.
How to choose
Three questions decide most of it. Leave-on or rinse-off? Leave-on products need a preservative that is approved for skin contact at the dose used; rinse-off products can use stronger, lower-dose chemistries such as CMIT/MIT. What claims are on the label? Paraben-free and formaldehyde-free claims point to the phenoxyethanol blends (EsoDant 9010, PE, PC, PCS). Which markets? Our data sheets state use levels against EU Annex V, US and Asian limits so one formulation can be exported everywhere.

Frequently asked questions
Which preservative should I use in a paraben-free leave-on cream or lotion?
EsoDant 9010, the 90 : 10 blend of phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin, at 0.5 – 1.1 %. It is free from parabens, formaldehyde donors and isothiazolinones, stable from pH 3 to 12 and approved for leave-on use in the EU, the USA and Asia.
What is the most economical preservative for shampoos, body washes and liquid soaps?
DMDM hydantoin, supplied as EsoDant 55 at 0.2 – 1.0 %, or the DMDM hydantoin + CMIT/MIT blend EsoDant 510 at 0.03 – 0.40 % where a very low dose and strong activity against mould and yeast are wanted in rinse-off products.
Which preservative works in home-care liquids such as floor cleaners, surface cleaners and fabric softeners?
EsoDant 510 and EsoDant 55 for most aqueous cleaners and softeners; EsoDant 9010 where a paraben-free, isothiazolinone-free label is required. Each product page lists the home-care applications it has been used in.
How much phenoxyethanol is allowed in a cosmetic product?
1.0 % in the finished product in the European Union (Regulation (EC) 1223/2009, Annex V/29), Japan, China and ASEAN, for both rinse-off and leave-on products. The USA sets no limit. EsoDant 9010 is therefore dosed at up to 1.1 % of the blend.
